I have found country music like some folks find religion. And it’s all because I heard Jason Aldean singing “Dirt Road Anthem” on the radio a couple weeks back. Those rap verses were just enough to get my attention and then, bam, all my other music started gathering dust.
So I dug a little deeper and found out that ole Jason didn’t write “Dirt Road Anthem”, Brantley Gilbert did. And not only that, he wrote “My Kinda Party”, too. And if that wasn’t enough, Aldean also covered Gilbert’s “The Best of Me” on an older LP.
Sounds like ole Jason really likes his fellow Georgian’s songwriting. Can’t say I blame him.
Surprisingly, my least favorite tracks of Gilbert’s are his versions of the two new Aldean covers. Gotta give Jason credit, he does justice to those tunes where Gilbert’s versions sound kind of flat. But what I did discover while I was diggin’ around in Gilbert’s new “Halfway to Heaven” LP was a good old fashioned, hard-driving southern rock tune called “Kick it in the Sticks”. Oh man, here we go again…back to my high school days with the jocks and the bikers and the hippies and the hicks. We were doin’ just that. Awesome song on an awesome album.
Sorry Jason. I’m gonna be hangin’ out with Brantley for awhile. I’ll catch up with you later.
